My StoryTen schools, eight countries
I'm from St. Lucia, a Caribbean country of about 160,000 people.
My father worked for a bank that moved us constantly, between islands and between towns within them. I went to around ten schools growing up. At the time I hated it. Making friends over and over is hard when you’re twelve.
When it was my turn to choose, everyone I knew was going to the US or Canada. I applied to Spain, to a university in Mallorca, without really speaking Spanish. I ordered a winter jacket online, and when my mother opened the package her face fell. You were serious? You know nobody in Spain.
Spain led to London and a job at the World Travel & Tourism Council. I was young, and I found myself running events with the man who is now King. A surreal thing for a girl from a country most people can’t point to on a map.
Then Canada, with a husband and a three-month-old son, and the discovery that almost none of it counted here. I heard the same sentence over and over. You don't have Canadian experience.
I stopped defending my experience and started translating it.
From there it moved. Manager to Executive in under ten years, then transformations, global teams, an expat posting in Manila, and eventually a book about all of it.
Why this workWhy I do this now
Somewhere along the way I noticed that the part of the job I liked most was not the transformation work. It was watching someone I had backed get what they were owed.
I promoted a member of my team who was outstanding at what she did. She presented to the executive team, got a round of applause for the promotion, and everyone thanked her for what she had contributed. She cried. That is not something I can put a price tag on.
I also did not get here on my own. There were women along my path who gave me advice, opened doors and told me the truth when it would have been easier not to. I stood on their shoulders.
So now there is a book, a framework, coaching and speaking. It’s the same thing in four formats: telling people what I wish someone had told me, so it takes them less time than it took me.
My bookSo I wrote a book
I am not a leadership guru, nor do I claim to be. There are others far more qualified. Like every leader, I carry my own series of mistakes, missteps and lessons learned the hard way.
That’s what the book is. How to build credibility somewhere new, read a culture you didn’t grow up in, influence without authority, and make your work visible. It’s also where The Global Leader's Compass™ came from.
If any of this sounds like where you are
Most of the people I work with are doing well and know they’re capable of more. The question is usually where to focus. That’s a good conversation to have.
